Philly Fountain with solar-powered touchscreen

Designed to increase inter-community interaction, or with outsiders for that matter, designer Justin Johnsen has come up with an advanced fountain that apart from quenching the thirst of the passersby also complements the aesthetics of Kelly Drive, Philadelphia. Hailed as “Philly Fountain,” the hi-tech fountain integrates a touch sensitive screen to work as a point of connection, prompting people to take part in a group conversation or activities initiated by earlier visitors. Integrating solar panels on top to run the electric system with renewable energy, the fountain also includes two oversize buttons that glows to make the unit visible to passersby at night. When not powering the two-sided touchscreen, the energy produced by solar panels is stored in battery reserves for future consumption. People simply come to the fountain to drink water and leave their mark or message on the touchscreen to start a conversation, bringing people closer to each other.
